As we approach Camino Bjelovar-Bilogora Autumn 2026, we bring you an overview of upcoming walking events that will guide you through authentic landscapes, rich history, and the warmth of local hospitality.
Walking schedule:
- September 26, 2026 – Nova Rača → Ruškovac
- September 27, 2026 – Ruškovac → Martinac
- October 10, 2026 – Martinac → Čazma
Camino as a revival for rural areas
The Camino is not just a pilgrimage — it is a catalyst for life in rural regions. Everything begins with local people, their initiative and hospitality, and then expands as visitors and pilgrims arrive from other places and countries. They stay, explore, taste local food, and experience the destination in a deeper way.
A particularly important moment is the Holy Year 2027 (Jubilee Year). According to Church tradition, this occurs when the feast of Saint James (July 25) falls on a Sunday. During a Holy Year, the number of pilgrims increases significantly, and it carries special spiritual meaning, including the possibility of a plenary indulgence.
The Camino Bjelovar-Bilogora route is a perfect opportunity for those who wish to experience the Camino in a different way — in peace, nature, and an authentic setting.
Nova Rača – a beginning marked by the Knights Templar
Our journey begins in Nova Rača, a place where history has been alive for centuries. As early as 1312, the Knights Templar laid the foundations of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Inside the church, a stone plaque bears symbols of that era — a crescent, a six-pointed star, and a Maltese-style cross, along with the inscription fratres rubri (“red brothers”), referring to the Templars.
Today, this Marian sanctuary is a place where pilgrims gather and receive a blessing before setting off — just as they did more than 700 years ago.
Ruškovac – a meeting with tradition and heritage
In Ruškovac, you will encounter a special story — an ethnographic collection opened in 2025, dedicated to preserving the material heritage of the region.
Here you can experience:
- a traditional rural room and kitchen
- insights into everyday life of the past
- a unique presentation of flax processing — from flax to linen
This stop adds depth to the Camino experience by connecting you with the traditions of the area.
Samarica – a hidden gem of sacred art
Emerging from the silence of the forest, Samarica is a place with roots dating back to 1334.
The Church of Saint Catherine houses a remarkable treasure — a magnificent Baroque altar from 1747, considered one of the finest examples of sacred architecture in the region. Its rich interior and historical significance make this stop truly memorable.
Martinac – where two European cultural routes meet
The day ends in Martinac, on a hill overlooking the rolling landscapes of Moslavina.
Here stands the Church of Saint Martin, recognized with the designation “Footsteps of Saint Martin”. This is also where two major Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe intersect:
- the Way of Saint James (Camino)
- the Route of Saint Martin
This symbolic place completes the circle — from the Templars in Nova Rača, through layers of history and spirituality, to the universal story of pilgrimage.
