The stone balls at the Samarica site (Moslavačka gora) are a fascinating geological phenomenon. They were formed from migmatite, rocks between 300 and 500 million years old. They owe their specific shape to “spherical exfoliation” (cracking of the rock in layers like an arch) and long-term erosion after emerging to the surface. Although the rocks are from the Paleozoic, today’s relief and the final appearance of the spheres were formed during the Neogene, making them one of the oldest and most interesting parts of Croatia.
