Blue and Red Lake

These beautiful karst lakes are located on the very edge of the town of Imotski and are among the biggest attractions of Dalmatian Zagora.

Blue Lake is named after its beautiful color and is approximately 800 m long (longer diameter northeast-southwest) and 250-400 m wide, while the height varies from 386 m to 528 m according to the latest measurements. It is known for large oscillations of depth, varying from complete drying in dry years, to a maximum depth of 90 m in the rainy season – when the level climbs to 329 m above sea level.

This amazing lake is also a favorite bathing area in Imotski. Stone serpentines lead from the lookout down to the lake.

Red Lake is named after the reddish color of the almost vertical rocks around it.

The measured height difference is 528 m, with a depth of 287 m – which according to the data ranks it among the deepest lakes in Europe.

It is known that the lake was formed by the collapse of the vault above the pit, but there is also an interesting legend about Gavan’s court. According to legend, in ancient times there were court above the lake that collapsed into the ground, and the lake was formed in that place.
