The reason why Punat is considered one of the youngest villages on the island of Krk, is the fact that the important events in the village have been recorded only for the past 100 years. Until then Punat was part of the city of Krk.
Despite its “late” records, Punat history goes back to the ancient times, when this area was inhabited by Greeks, Romans and Illyrians.
It is placed on the west part of the island and beside being an olive growing centre, it is a nautical one also with centuries of nautical tradition.
The most iconic part of Punat is Košljun island and its Franciscan monastery, founded in 1447. The monastery is a cultural and natural jewel well worth visiting. It is only reachable by boat.
