The fourth stage of the Camino Zadar pilgrimage begins in Sukošan, a charming seaside town known for its long coastline and peaceful streets. After a morning rest, pilgrims set off through narrow stone alleys, making their way to the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, where they can pause for a moment of silent prayer before continuing their journey.
Leaving the church, the path leads to a scenic promenade, offering views of the remains of the Archbishop’s summer residence, Palac, as well as the crystal-clear sea. The route then follows the Sukošan waterfront before transitioning onto a gravel road along the marina fence, leading into the town of Bibinje. Pilgrims pass through quiet local streets, immersing themselves in the town’s authentic Dalmatian charm.
Upon reaching the seaside promenade, the path passes above the Church of St. Roch, then continues under a bridge, following the railway line before rising onto a macadam road that leads to the Port of Gaženica.
This stretch of the journey highlights the contrast between the region’s traditional way of life and its modern maritime infrastructure, offering a unique perspective on the area’s cultural evolution.
Leaving the ferry port behind, the path follows the seaside promenade into the Arbanasi neighborhood before entering the historic heart of Zadar—a city rich in history and sacred heritage. Pilgrims make their way through the old town, where Kalelarga (Zadar’s famous main street) leads them past the historic churches of the peninsula to the Church and Monastery of St. Francis. Here, they can visit the document of the Peace of Zadar, which is also featured on the back of the Camino de Compostela Zadar pilgrim passport. Pilgrims can receive a stamp here and take a moment to rest in the monastery’s spiritual atmosphere.
The path then leads toward the sea, bringing pilgrims to Zadar’s iconic Greeting to the Sun installation, where they can listen to the haunting melodies of the Sea Organ—a beautiful fusion of nature and art.
The final stretch of today’s journey crosses a pedestrian bridge before turning left toward the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. From there, the route winds through Zadar’s districts, passing through Borik, a popular seaside area. With the scent of the sea in the air and the gentle breeze at their backs, pilgrims follow the coastline all the way to Diklo, where the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary marks the end of the fourth stage of the Camino Zadar pilgrimage.
