CAMINO BJELOVAR–BILOGORA New Stage: Martinac – Čazma (16.2 km)

Our new stage of the Camino Bjelovar–Bilogora route takes us from Martinac to Čazma. This 16.2 km trail (8.4 km asphalt) leads through a peaceful landscape of gentle hills (110–200 m above sea level), offering a unique blend of nature, history, spirituality, and art.

The official opening is scheduled for October 10, 2026, as part of a local initiative in cooperation with the Brotherhood of St. James, aimed at revitalizing centuries-old pilgrimage traditions in this region.

A special highlight of this stage is the presence of two open-air art galleries:

  • The evolving art space of Vlado Franjević

  • Matešin Gallery by Franjo Matešin


Martinac – The Starting Point

Our pilgrimage begins in the small village of Martinac, a place with a rich history dating back to 1091. Though quiet today, it was once a much more vibrant settlement.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Martinac had mills, a sawmill, a brick factory, and a primary school (founded in 1929). These traces tell the story of a once lively rural community.

Local legends add another layer of charm. A part of the village called Turčin is linked to stories of a Turkish commander and a golden carriage near a spring, while the area known as Konačne recalls places where armies once stayed.


Bojana and the Landscape of Reflection

As the route continues toward Bojana, pilgrims walk through serene natural surroundings. This quiet environment defines the character of the stage—perfect for reflection, contemplation, and a deeper Camino experience.


Matešin Gallery – Where Art Meets Spirituality

One of the key stops along the route is Matešin Gallery in Bojana. Academic painter Franjo Matešin welcomes visitors into his artistic world.

The gallery and its surroundings feature works inspired by faith, everyday life, and contemporary society. A particularly notable element is the chapel of the Queen of Heaven, where the artist presents a modern interpretation of the Virgin Mary.

This location offers a unique combination of:

  • sacred art

  • personal spiritual expression

  • direct interaction with visitors


Vlado Franjević’s Art Space – Creativity in Nature

Another remarkable stop is the open-air art space by Vlado Franjević. This evolving artistic environment displays sculptures, installations, and poetic works created over time.

Here, art is not confined to walls—it becomes part of the natural landscape. Visitors can:

  • explore artworks outdoors

  • read poetry displayed on-site

  • experience art as a living, evolving process

This is a project in constant development, blending creativity, nature, and spirituality.


The “Magic of Lights” – Salaj Family Estate

Near Čazma lies the well-known Salaj family estate, home to the “Magic of Lights” event that has attracted visitors for decades.

What began with 70,000 lights has grown into a spectacular display of over 5 million lights. The estate symbolizes creativity, dedication, and playful imagination—values that resonate strongly with the spirit of the Camino.


Arrival in Čazma

The stage concludes in Čazma, in front of the impressive Church of St. Mary Magdalene.

This historic church holds significant cultural value:

  • connected to King Béla IV

  • features nine altars

  • houses some of the oldest organs in Croatia

  • includes a rose window over six meters in diameter

It is also part of the Transromanica, a European cultural route recognized by the Council of Europe.
